Former Saracen Shines On Team BC
The Saracens would like to recognize the accomplishments of former player Kaitlyn Cumming (2008 – 2015), who is making an impact playing both 7's and 15's for Team BC!
Kaitlyn discovered rugby in high school. While playing for William Aberhart, she was coached by distinguished senior players Alana M, Brittany B, Becky P, and Michelle R, who worked their coaching magic to influence Kaitlyn to join the Saracens. Kaitlyn played for two seasons in our junior program, and in 2010 made the jump to play for the Saracens senior women's team, where she enjoyed 5 seasons on the pitch, playing virtually every position except prop, second row, and fly half. Kaitlyn was an integral squad member when the Saracens won provincials in 2013.
Kaitlyn found success in varsity rugby as well, playing for U Vic from 2009 – 2012, and U of A in 2013, when the team were CIS National Champions, and 2014.
More than just speed and great footwork on the pitch, Kaitlyn has brains as well: she earned her law degree in 2015, and moved to Kamloops to work as a lawyer. In her first season with the Kamloops Rugby Club, Kaitlyn was awarded the team's Most Valuable Back. After working to further improve her game, Kaitlyn was selected to Team BC, first as a 15's player, and then to their 7's side. In the last two weeks, the 7's side won the Women's Open Division at the Las Vegas Invitational, and finished second at the Vancouver Rugby Festival. Kaitlyn continues to push herself to further develop her game and continue improving on the pitch.
Kaitlyn's best memories of being a Saracen mostly involve dress-up events: her rookie night in Banff was a great team experience, as were her Stampede Sevens tournaments (which we continue to welcome her back for)!
Congrats, Red, on all your accomplishments both on and off the pitch—we are so proud to see all your hard work paying off!
