Saracens vs. Canucks
Posted on 2001-06-10 by Agustin Louro
Our only match of the weekend (due to the 24-hour Relay) saw the firsts against the Canucks in their second tilt of 2001.
The Canucks scored first, but the Saracens quickly responded with a penalty from James Betcher and followed up with a try from Brian Hill. I'm not sure, but I think this kid is fast. The Saries continued on strongly with a sequence of phases that saw (what I thought was a try) called back as held up and a counted try by Allan Ford from the ensuing 5-metre scrum. The half-time score was then 15-5 in favour of the green, white, and black.
The second half was not as favourable to the Saracens first XV as they were shut out and gave up four more tries and three conversions for a final score of 31-15. In the second frame, the Canucks were able to turn over posession in contact on various occasions and take advantage of Saracen mistakes by scoring tries. One sequence of events summed up the second half for the Saracens: a quick-thinking Brian Collins took a quick lineout and hit his opponent with the ball, getting his team a free kick as the Canuck second row was not five metres from the touch line when he made contact with the ball. On the resulting free kick, a confused scrum half and prop ran into each other and gave up a penalty for obstruction.
The Saracens will certainly have to be on the same page when they take on the rising Lethbridge first XV on Saturday.
