Saracens Undefeated on the Day

Posted on 2001-05-27 by Agustin Louro

The Saracens come up 3-0 on the day as the women, seconds and firsts were all in action on Saturday.

Women v. Rams

The Lady Saracens finally started their 2001 campaign on Saturday. It was a fantastic start, as they demolished the Rams 32-0. Early pressure from the Saracens resulted in a the first try of the season for Heather Brodie and the consequent conversion from Sally Hollows. The green, white, and black maintained the play in the Rams' territory for most of the first half and it paid off with another five-pointer, this time from winger Anne Birrell. The first forty minutes concluded with Woman of the Match Kristy Quiring's first of four tries on the day. The second period undoubtedly also belonged to the Saracens, as Quiring finished her unanswered sequence of tries courtesy of good multi-phase play and creative backline movements.

Scoring
Brodie- Try (5)
Hollows- Conversion (2)
Birrell- Try (5)
Quiring- 4 Tries (20)

Seconds v. Hornets

The Seconds entered the fixture looking for their first victory of the season after two losses. Unfortunately, it was the yellow and black who struck first with an unconverted try. Despite pressure from both sides, good defense and bad breaks kept the halftime score at 5-0. The second forty minutes were kinder to the Saracens, as they opened the scoring in the period with an opportunistic try from hooker Greg Boutwell. Man of the Match Scott Montgomery corrected his early kicking woes with his first conversion of the day. Soon after, good forward play led to another five pointer for the Saracens, this time from Dave Roberts; converted by Montgomery. Flyhalf Montgomery made his second division debut a memorable one as he went on to score a well-earned try and convert his own score. The Hornets made a last-minute attempt at a comeback but it was too late. Final score: Saracens 21 Hornets 12.

Scoring:
Hornets- 2 Tries, 1 Conversion (12)
Boutwell- Try (5)
Montgomery- 1 Try, 3 Conversions (11)
Roberts- Try (5)

Firsts v. Hornets

Sitting in fourth place after two weeks of the competition, the firsts were looking for a victory to vault them into second place, while a bonus point for four tries would put them atop the tables (albeit temporarily). The first half saw most of the scoring in this match, opened by midfielder Mike Burnham's try. Kelly Wilson's conversion made it 7-0 for the Saracens. Some breaks from the Hornet back row drove the play close to the Saracen goal-line, but the yellow and black were unable to break through. Once again, punishing tackles in the centres kept the Hornets backline at bay. Proving that some people only need one name, Samoan import Sati overcame a knee injury sustained at Rugbyfest the previous week to put the Saracens up 12-0. The Hornets responded with a try of their own, but their kicker missed the mark and the halftime score was 12-5 Saracens. Although it was not uneventful, the second half only saw three points added to the score sheet, as the Hornets experimented with a number of kickers until one of them finally hit the target. Final score: Saracens 12 Hornets 8.

Scoring
Hornets- 1 Try, 1 Penalty (8)
Burnham- Try (5)
Wilson- Conversion (2)
Sati- Try (5)
